IMS & Dry Needling
Intramuscular stimulation (IMS) is a single-needle, dry needling technique that involves the insertion of a thin, sterile needle into the body. The needling points selected by the practitioner are targeted at trigger points, also known as “knots” in your muscle, which can be the cause of your pain and chronic or persistent conditions.
IMS stimulates the targeted muscles in order to help them relax and it helps to restart the body’s natural healing process. It is an extremely effective technique for treatment of trigger point or myofascial pain, neuropathic pain, and chronic or persistent pain conditions.
This technique specifically targets areas in the muscle that are sore and tight, which sometimes cause a twitch response when the needle in inserted – this is a desired response with this technique. Often, you will feel immediate improvement in pain, muscle tension and mobility. Sometime a low level of discomfort is felt for a couple of day following treatment, which self-resolves and is accompanied by improvements in pain, mobility and overall function.
